Seascape, Bermuda from the 'Birkdale'
A seascape showing a dark mass of cloud over the sea, from the deck of the 'Birkdale'. Everett has used form and colour to evoke the highly stylized effect. The large bank of cloud stands out against the vivid yellow sky as a mass of dark grey and blue paint. Rain can be seen falling on the right, against the horizon. The rest of the sky has been rapidly sketched with a broad wash of colour. The flat calm sea has been loosely painted with small brush strokes of different colours to indicate waves and movement. The vivid yellow sky is reflected on the surface of the water. Everett joined the barque, 'Birkdale', and sailed from Bristol to Sabine Pass, Texas, April to June 1920.
