Seascape
A sketch of sea and sky looking towards an empty horizon. The artist has been concerned to show the movement and form of the waves. The waves in the distance are arranged horizontally in curved rows, their undersides picked out in dark blue paint. In the foreground on the right is the wash from the ship cutting the picture space at an angle with foam. It is a different shape to the rest of the image and disrupts the harmony in the way that the ship disrupts the surface of the water. The sky appears as a thin blue wash of paint, which is brightest at the horizon.
