Seascape
A sketch looking at the effects of the sun behind cloud over the sea. The calm sea is empty on the horizon and is light in the foreground with the effects of the sun and darker towards the horizon where it meets the sky. The dramatic effects of the sky are achieved by the two strong diagonal blocks of lemon paint representing shafts of sunlight. Although the sun itself is partly concealed behind the purple-grey mass which represents cloud, its presence is the purpose of the painting. Above the cloud are several layers of yellow and salmon pink paint.
