Seascape from the 'Castilian'

A sketch from the 'Castilian', showing the dramatic effects of the sun. The sea is contrasted by appearing darker with a layer of indigo hue towards the horizon and short brush strokes in various colours in the foreground. Above the horizon line there is a layer of red paint followed by a line of blue to indicate a bank of cloud. On either side above this are hints of pink and lilac. The sun is indicated by brilliant light and thickly applied paint roughly indented and positioned to imply the sun's rays. The sky then appears as a range of colours. The reflections from the sun are streaked across in yellow and pink. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II.
