Seascape from the 'Penaglis M. Hadoulis'
A small seascape painted from the deck of the Greek-owned steamer, 'Penaglis M. Hadoulis'. Between December 1931 and March 1932 Everett sailed on the ship on her voyage from Cardiff, Wales, to Montevideo, Uruguay, and back. He has used bold-brush diagonal strokes to capture and emphasize the immensity of the sky. The artist has used tones of mauve, lilac and pale blue paint to show the expanse of sky and the play of light both in the sky and on the waves. Everett produced hundreds of similar rapid seascapes done on the spot, sometimes painted in quick succession. He was intent upon capturing the relationship and fleeting nature of light and the movement of waves in an ever-changing sea. It is signed with the artist's monogram bottom right and inscribed 'PMH' on the reverse.Herbert Barnard John Everett
