Seascape, Jersey

A sketch of waves coming inshore on the beach at Corbiere, Jersey. Everett stayed there for three weeks from 13 January to 6 February 1928 to concentrate on the visual effects of waves and light over the sea during the winter. This sketch is one of a series painted during the visit. The loose brush strokes imitate the movement of the waves and the use of colour also suggests cold wintry conditions. The artist has paid attention to the effects of light in the sky, concentrating on the light from the sun radiating out across the sky and casting a reflection across the surface of the water. Impasto paint has been used to show the chaotic state of the sky. An indistinct inscription indicates that this may be a view of Cobo Bay, Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, which Everett visited between January and March in 1911.Herbert Barnard John Everett
