Sectional model

Scale: Unknown. A model depicting the midship of a bomb vessel made entirely in wood with metal fittings and painted in realistic colours. The model shows the position of the mortar bed, provisions for firing the mortar, and the strengthened construction required. The depicted vessel differs above main deck level on the port and starboard sides, one being markedly higher than the other. The hull, carved from solid wood, is painted off-white below the waterline, with a black-painted closed wale above, and ochre above the waterline. The top of the bulwarks on both sides are painted black, though it is deeper on the taller side. The interior of the hull, floors, beams and knees, are unpainted, and the section faces are off-white. In the centre of the hold, directly beneath the position for the mortar, is a strengthened section made up of closely positioned vertical and horizontal timbers, between which is a two-tier shot rack. The deck is shown in frame and either painted or stained dark brown or black. Inboard bulwarks and other deck features are painted red. The provision for the mortar, bed and platform is octagonal on the short side, circular on the tall side. Fore and aft of the gun position are two hatches with covers. The taller side has two large gun ports with half lids opening downwards, a large opening side section which is hinged in the middle, and a partly planked upper deck or walkway supported by a four-sectioned frame. The shorter side has two smaller gunports in the bulwark with a lower section of bulwark between them. The model is displayed on its keel with two chocks either side of the hull on a plain rectangular wooden baseboard. On model "M.A.6959" and "27 | 27".Original size: 249 mm x 358 mm x 365 mm
