Sectional model
Scale: 1:48. A model of the midship section of a warship showing Joseph Tucker's proposals for continuous frame bolting. The model is made almost entirely in naturally varnished wood. The hull comprises of a complete section of hull frames from the keel to the bulwarks showing four decks internally, the upper three of which are partially planked where they meet the hull. The deck beams are reinforced with iron bands to the hanging knees secured to the inside of the hull, which is partially finished with ceiling planks down to just above the waterline. The exterior of the hull is complete with five gun ports, partial planking on the bulwark and upper wale to which a single deadeye is secured via a wooden stool. The framing consists of individual frames secured with metal bolts which, towards the waterline, are finished with wooden infills. A series of red horizontal red lines are painted on the lower portion of the hull to denote the position of the continuous bolting. Inscribed on a paper label is '20'.
