Sectional model
Scale: Not to scale. A model of a double windlass proposed by J. Pindar in 1821, shown fitted to a stylised bow of a wooden vessel with a section of stump foremast. The model has been made largely in mahogany, stained and polished a dark brown colour. A rail is depicted around the stylised foredeck, and the foredeck acts as a baseboard being supported on four turned wooden feet. The windlass has one main wheel immediately abaft the stump mast, while the forward wheel is divided into two sections, one either side of the stump mast. Cog wheels on the inward facing edges of the two forward facing wheels engage with two much larger cog wheels mounted on the rear most wheel. The cog wheels are all made inbrass. The windlass can be operated and has provision for levers, but these are missing on the model.
