Sextant by Spencer Browning & Rust
Black-lacquered brass oval-pattern frame, wooden handle. Signed on the limb 'Spencer Browning & Rust, London', and marked 'Presented by Greenwich Hospital to Edmund Swain August 1844'. Bronzed limb with inlaid silver scale from -5Ôòá├ö to 145Ôòá├ö by 10', measuring to 133Ôòá├ö. Silver vernier to 10'', zero at right. Tangent screw and clamp screw on the back of the index arm. Index glass adjustment by screw, horizon glass by capstan screw. Four shades (red, red, red, green), three horizon shades (red, red, green). Magnifier on 101 mm swivelling arm. Telescope bracket in two parts, fitted for correcting collimation error, perpendicular adjustment by rising piece and milled knob. Telescope (171 mm, ocular section missing) probably inverted image, telescope (171 mm, ocular section missing) probably inverted image. Sight-tube (92 mm), sight-tube (76 mm, incomplete), adjusting pin. Shaded eyepiece, magnifying glass and unidentified part are missing. Radius 8.15'' (205 mm). In fitted wooden keystone box containing in the lid a trade label for Henry Hughes & Son.
Edmund Swain, the original owner, is recorded in the 'Navy List' from 1847 to 1871 as rising from Assistant Master to Staff Commander. He died on active service on the China Station in HMS Ôòá├│├½├öÔö¼├×┬ñOceanÔòá├│├½├öÔö¼├½├Æ├│. Presented by the Greenwich Sea Cadets, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, in 1966.
