Shipping in the Pool of London
The Tower of London and the surrounding cityscape can be seen in the background lit from the left and beneath a tall build-up of clouds. Vessels of various types and sizes illustrate the busy activity on the river in the foreground. Just to the right of the centre of the composition a cutter crowded with passengers appears to be making her way towards a number of ships at anchor on the right. Stylistically the painting is executed in a Dutch manner, which prevailed in British marine art until the early 19th century.
