Ships and a galley wrecked on a rocky coast

Like many similar storm and shipwreck scenes by 17th century Dutch artists, this panel painting has an underlying moral message, picking up on ideas of the 'ship of state' or the ship as symbolizing the passage of life. Several ships - the foremost flying the Dutch flag - and a galley are blown helplessly against a barren, inhospitable shoreline, probably an imaginary reworking of a Mediterranean coast. In the foreground bales and casks float away, perhaps a reminder of the transience of worldly goods.
