Ship's bell from the 'Royal George'

Bell reputedly from 1st rate 'Royal George' launched 1756. It has a cast in, rectangular, crown staple and thick soundbow. On the side, a broad arrow has been cast between two circular marks which may be poor impressions of coins. Inscribed 'T:B 1773'. 'Royal George' foundered on 29 August 1782. The bell hung for many years in St Ann's church, Portsmouth dockyard and was damaged during Second World War bombing. A contemporary account of its recovery from the wreck has not yet been found.
