Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)
Image information
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)
Born in Ireland, Shackleton was educated at Dulwich College, London, before becoming a merchant seaman in sail and steam and then an explorer who three times attempted to reach the South Pole. This portrait was probably painted from life before Shackleton set off on his final voyage (the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition (1921-1922)) and was purchased from the sale of the artist's studio collection at Bonham's in 1974.
