Sir Thomas Love (died 1627)
Sir Thomas Love was a naval officer who was close to the Duke of Buckingham (George Villiers, 1592-1628) when he was Lord High Admiral, and commanded the 'Antelope' when Prince Charles (Charles I) and the Duke visited Madrid in pursuit of a marriage to the Spanish Infanta. The portrait is inscribed 'Aetatis 49 Anno 1620'. The identity of the artist is not known, but he is likely to have been one of the portrait painters who had recently arrived in England from the Netherlands, but there is a possibility that it may be a later copy.
