Slave ship
A painting of a Liverpool based ship believed to be involved in the slave trade. It bears strong similarities to the same artists 'Liverpool Slave Ship', painted circa 1780 and included in the permanent exhibition at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, 'Transatlantic Slavery, Against Human Dignity' which opened in Liverpool in 1994. Both ships have yet to be identified. The present painting may record an actual incident but could also have been commissioned for the Liverpool offices of a bank or merchant involved in slavery to give a harmonious view of the middle passage at a time when the abolitionist movement was beginning to pose a serious threat to the trade. Part of Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection.William Jackson
