Snow goggles with blue lenses: Relic of Sir John Franklins last expedition 1845-1848
A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-1848. Spectacles with tinted lenses in a case found in an abandoned boat at Erebus Bay, King William Island, in May 1859 by the McClintock Search Expedition 1857-1859. The cylindrical case is made of sheet iron, tinned and soldered with a lid. The spectacles have straight, hinged sides and oval blue lenses; wire mesh remains on the right-hand side. They would have been intended to protect the wearer's eyes from snow blindness.
