SS 'Britannia'
'The Cunard Royal Mail steamship Britannia (John Hewitt Commander) as she appeared leaving her dock at East Boston, February 3d, 1844, bound from Boston to Liverpool, a canal having been cut in the ice 7 miles long and 100 feet wide'. This is the ship on which Dickens went to America in 1842, as recounted in his 'Amer-can Notes'. NMM has the silver wine set (by Lows, Ball of Boston), presented by the passengers to her commander, John Hewitt, at the end of that stormy voyage.Original size: 289 mm x 453 mm
