Stirrup hilted dress sword
Stirrup hilted dress sword, which was presented to the National Maritime Museum by the Museum of the Cheshire Regiment. The gilt stirrup guard is chased and made in the form of a dolphin entwined with a laurel branch. There is an acanthus leaf on top of the quillon. The langets are embossed with a foul anchor motif. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending for a quarter of the length of the back-piece. The ivory grip has ridges to accommodate binding wires, which are now missing. There is a gilt band at the top of the grip, which is embossed with a floral motif.
