Straight-bladed dirk

Owned by George and Henry Symons (died 1819). The hilt consists of a turned ivory grip with brass pommel, ferrule and circular shell. The pommel is decorated with a flower and green key pattern, the latter also adorning the ferrule. The shell is concave and has an edging panel of lines. The blade has a slightly flattened oval section, tapering to a sharp point - a stiletto (?) and there are very faint traces of etching on the blade, what appears to be a foliage motif. The brass scabbard has two suspension rings. There is no shoe to the chape, but a button finish. The throat of the scabbard is shaped to fit the shell. One of the dirks belonging to twins George and Henry Symons, who died aged sixteen years in HMS Sybilla at Villa Cruz, 1819. Ancestors of Miss Huddart. See also WPN1520.
