Straight stirrup hilted 'fighting' sword
Straight stirrup hilted 'fighting' sword, which was issued to Royal Naval Masters, Mates and Warrant Officers. The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt stirrup guard with langets. The langets are engraved with an anchor and cable motif. The sword has a stepped pommel and a back-piece with a 'flute'. The black fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The straight, flat-backed bright steel blade has a single broad fuller running to the point. The blade is engraved with naval emblems, a crown and an anchor motif and the Royal coat of arms.
