Study of a damlooper and a smalschip lying alongside one another

This composition shows a damlooper in the foreground, seen from a point just before the starboard beam. This viewpoint facilitates a view of the tiller, the long horizontal bar connected to the rudder, and details as far as back as the end of the hatch. The part showing the stern sheets (or sails) has been torn off. The ship's mast, as well as her spritsail and her staysail, have been drawn in. On the damlooper's left is a smalschip: only her port quarter and part of her deck and cabin-top are showing. Beneath the damlooper's bow is a small sailing dinghy known as a skiff. The drawing has been approximately dated by its style.
