Study of a wijdschip lying at a buoy
Study of a wijdschip lying at a buoy. A wijdschip was a small Dutch transport vessel. The Younger is likely to have used drawings such as this for his for his coastal paintings of the 1660 which include a variety of craft but also have a strong landscape element and convey a strong sense of atmosphere with well-observed light effects (which can be seen in this drawing despite the disfiguring spots or 'foxing'). The Younger made studies of such craft in his own right and it is possible that this drawing may have been made by him. The left hand side of the drawing has been extended with a separate piece of paper, perhaps to enable the artist to work out the composition of a painting.
