Sunset, Hills, probably Scotland

Wyllie was versatile in his subjects and exhibited landscapes as well as marine paintings, many of which have a strong landscape element. This watercolour study of mountains and a loch suggests both immense space as well as atmosphere. It is likely to have been painted in Scotland toward the end of the artist's life, possibly in the Glencoe area. In 1928 Wyllie exhibited a drypoint (with aquatint), 'The Pass of Glencoe', at the Royal Academy.
