Teacup, part of a tea service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805).
It has a gilt rim and base, and is painted with an oak leaf and acorn border. Opposite the handle is a foul anchor within laurel branches tied with blue ribbon and with the gilt inscriptions 'Nelson/2nd April/Baltic'. On either side '14th February' (the date of the battle of Cape St Vincent) and 'The Glorious 1st Augt' (the date of the Battle of the Nile). In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern are referred to as the 'Baltic Set'.
