The exploration ship Terra Nova (1884) is lying off. The ship's boat is being rowed ashore. In the foreground are six unidentified expedition members waiting on the beach. The ship returned to Cape Evans on the 8th February after having discovered Amundsen at the Bay of Whales further east along the coast.
The caption in Ponting's book (The Great White South) states "The 'Terra Nova' leaves for New Zealand", as the ship left that day after delivering the message regarding Amundsen, off-leaded two ponies.
