The arrival of Mary of Modena at Dover, 21 November/1 December 1673
The arrival of Mary of Modena at Dover. Mary of Modena crossed over from Calais to Dover on 21 November [OS]/21 December 1673. She was met by the Duke of York and they were declared married soon after the landing. They stayed in Dover for two nights, and then went through Canterbury and Rochester to Gravesend, where they were met by the king, Charles II, in the barges on 26 November [OS]/6 December, and a royal procession was made to Whitehall that morning. Dover harbour is shown to the right with the masts of a number of yachts appearing above the breakwater. The further breakwater has a coach on it and is crowded with people. A sea wall runs across the drawing and shingle in the foreground and to the right. In the right distance, beyond some houses, there is a shingle bank inscribed. There is land in the left distance, inscribed but crossed through 'kalis vrangrijk' (Calais, France).
