The Attack on Boulogne, October 1804
Plan and key. After the war between Britain and France resumed in 1803, the French built up a huge invasion fleet, mainly based at Boulogne. Though the British were confident that they could defeat any French invasion, they needed to be constantly vigilant. The drawing shows the intense naval effort needed to prevent a French invasion force getting out. In the foreground of this watercolour is the main British squadron with Admiral Lord Keith's flagship, the two-decker 'Monarch', 74 guns, in the centre and frigates and sloops around it. Behind them is a line of smaller British sloops and brigs.
