The Battle of Lowestoft, 3 June 1665, after the blowing up of the 'Eendracht'
The opening action of the second Anglo-Dutch war was witnessed by Van de Velde from a galliot, which is shown in the left foreground. However, this drawing and its two companions date from after the Van de Velde's move to England in 1672/73, possibly 1674. They may be grouped with other drawings, also with high horizons, which were intended as designs for tapestries. The battle is here shown after the blowing up of the principal Dutch flagship the 'Eendracht', in which Jacob van Wassenaer, Lord of Obdam, was killed.
