The big freeze at Anchor and Hope Wharf, Charlton
The winter of 1894-95 was especially severe and parts of the Thames were frozen for weeks. In this photograph, ice blocks the Anchor and Hope Wharf in Charlton, home to Castle's shipbreaking yard. The ice was so thick that it played havoc with the workings of the port.
