The course of Delaware River from Philadelphia to Chester, exhibiting the several works erected by the rebels to defend its passage, with the attacks made upon them by His Majesty's land and sea forces. During the American Revolutionary War, the British forces under General Howe fought their way overland into Philadelphia in September 1777. The navy then had to gain control of the Delaware River.
