The discription of the forme and mannre of our in campment in the lord Generalls Northern Journey

The inspiration for this drawing was very probably the English translation of Machiavelli's 'L'arte della guerra', published in London in 1573. The book included diagrams and instructions on 'how to incamp an army'. From volume eight, Maps of Ireland, of the Dartmouth collection of maps and plans, compiled for or by George Legge, Master General of the Ordnance. There are four versions of this drawing in the volume.
