The Dutch fleet off Flushing, August/September 1666
The Dutch Fleet off Flushing, August [OS]/September 1666. The drawing shows, in the left foreground, part of the fortifications at Flushing. Yachts and small vessels are shown close under the walls. Stretching across to the right a large number of Dutch ships are at anchor. A few ships are under way with only a topsail set, including to the right the commander-in-chief, presumably Michiel de Ruyter in the 'Zeven Provincien' ('Seven Provinces'). This panoramic drawing, presumably made on the spot, is reminiscent of the Elder's drawings made hastily in the heat of battle, but in contrast reflects the Younger's interest in landscape as expressed in his calm beach scenes and 'parade' picture made around this time, before he moved to England.
