The facade of the ruins of St Paul's Church in Macao
The southern stone facade of the ruins of St Paul's Church in Macao. The church was built between 1602 and 1640 and the facade was carved between 1620 and 1627. It was destroyed by a fire during a typhoon on the 26 January 1835. The façade sits on a small hill, with 68 stone steps leading up to it and the photographer is stnading on the steps looking up. The photographer was serving at the time in the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Eagle (1918) and was on the China Station between May 1937 and September 1938. Waters Collection: HNC0410
