The girl stowaway seated on the main yard with the third mate
Looking out to sea from the 'Herzogin Cecilie', a four masted barque, with the pair sitting on the main yard. A few days into the passage from Port Lincoln to Falmouth the crew discovered a female stowaway. Her name was Miss Jennie Day and she "proved a good worker and thoroughly decent sort and pretty soon her time was fully occupied with keeping the quarters aft cleaner than they had ever been before, and teaching english and playing chess". Alan Villiers devoted one-tenth of the book he wrote on this passage to the stowaway incident and when the vessel discharged her cargo in Cardiff, Miss Day became the object of intense media attention.
