The 'Great Harry'
The 'Harry Grace a Dieu' 1520 painted by Dominick Serres RA presented to Greenwich Hospital by Shute, Bishop of Durham. Issued as a plate in E. H. Locker's 'Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...' (1831/2) a selective biographical catalogue of portraits and a few other pictures from the Naval Gallery of Greenwich Hospital, which he had established when Hospital Secretary in 1824. The original oil was one of a number by Serres presented to the Hospital for the Gallery in that year by Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham, from the estate of his late brother, Admiral Samuel Barrington. Serres had taken the subject from the well-known but anonymous painting of Henry VIII departing for the Field of the Cloth of Gold in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Unfortunately, after the Hospital became the Royal Naval College in 1873, Serres's copy was at some point moved to the Admiral President's House in the King Charles Court where it was destroyed in a fire that broke out in the hall and stairwell on 8 December 1935. This image is the only record of it.
