The 'Monmouth' disabled and in danger of being taken by the French 'Providien' near Trincomalee, April 1782
A preliminary drawing for a painting commissioned by Sir Edward Hughes. In 1782, following various actions with the French Vice-Admiral de Suffren off the coast of India (including the one depicted in this drawing), Hughes captured the French base at Trincomalee, on the east coast of what today is Sri Lanka. The drawing shows the 'Monmouth' disabled and in danger of being captured by the French on April 1782.
