The Reverend Doctor Alexander Scott (1768-1840)

The Reverend Alexander John Scott was chaplain to Admiral Lord Nelson. He went with Nelson in the 'Victory', 100 guns, during his last campaign and attended him at his death at Trafalgar. In the left background, there is a painting on the wall of a ship in a storm struck by lightning. This may refer to an incident off Jamaica in 1802 when the Reverend Scott was returning to Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth in the frigate 'Topaz'. The ship was struck and Scott was seriously injured, and it is probably this incident which has been recorded in the painting.
