'The 'Slave-Market' church and the mission infirmary at Mkunazini in the town of Zanzibar
A pencil drawing of Zanzibar monogrammed with the artist's initials, 'C.D.M.T'. and an inscription: 'The 'Slave-Market' Church and the Mission Infirmary at Mkunazini in the town of Zanzibar. Taken from Ngambo, a suburb the other side of the creek, at low water.' There is a further inscription below: 'Christchurch Cathedral on the site of the Slave Market, the High Altar is on the spot where the whipping post stood'. An inscription on the reverse reads: 'Zanzibar from the suburb across the creek called 'Ng'ambo' (The other side) Slavemarket Church, & Mission House (The Infirmary of the Mission), immediately on its left - When the tide is out as in the drawing people are always passing to & fro as represented - Native huts in foreground'. Markets, like this one in Antigua, were an important part of the local economies of the Caribbean islands. Planters were obliged to provide food for their enslaved labourers. To limit their costs, they allowed the slave to grow their own crops on scraps of land unsuitable for sugar production.
