The Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight
Image information
The Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight
A painterly interpretation of the River Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight. Like his father, Abraham 'Moonlight' Pether of Chichester, Henry Pether specialized in moonlight scenes. He was famed for his views of the Thames and this painting of Greenwich Hospital, seen from the west, is a particularly fine example of his topographical work. The foreground and architectural details are carefully studied and delineated, and the moonlight reflected from the Thames illuminates the scene. On the far left of the picture, beyond shipping moored in the river, lies the Isle of Dogs with the chimney of the Cumberland Mills oil-seed factory, which was demolished in the 1980s.
