The 'Wapen Van Utrecht' and the Dutch fleet becalmed at sea, May 1672?
In the left foreground, the 'Wapen van Utrecht' ('wapen van utrecht') is in stern view with topsails loosed. Two boats (marked 'L' and ?'S') are pulling towards her. A number of ships are in the background. The pen and grey ink may be the work of a later hand. This is one of 12 drawings at the NMM which by the inscriptions on them and by the paper they are on appear to belong to a series done before the Battle of Solebay, 28 May 1672. The only numbers traced in the NMM collection are 59 and 60. Other drawings made before the battle are in the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.Willem van de Velde the ElderOriginal size: 262 mm x 430 mm
