The yacht 'Isabel' Lying off Deptford
Image information
The yacht 'Isabel' Lying off Deptford
This painting dated circa 1820 shows the yacht 'Isabel' close to Deptford with a view of Greenwich in the distance and several other ships on the Thames. The looseness of the liquid brushstrokes, the atmospheric colouring and the overall tranquil and poetic mood set this image aside from the 17th century Dutch tradition, which had dominated British maritime painting in the previous century, and mark its style as truly 'romantic'.
