Thomas Young, Captain of Marines

An oval miniature in watercolour on ivory, in a gilt metal oval suspension frame, with a glazed back enclosing a woven pattern of dark brown hair. Previous record states there is an inscription on the reverse which reads 'RM 1801'. If so this can only be on the back of the ivory since the glass on the reverse, enclosing the hair, is engraved with a more complex monogram of, (possibly), the four letters G,A,S,D, though not one easy to decipher. The sitter is shown bust length facing forward but with his head half-turned to his left. He wears a red uniform with epaulettes and a pipe-clayed pouch or sword belt across the body over his right shoulder, and a white cravat over a black stock. He has blue eyes and his hair is powdered and probably tied in a queue behind. If the 1801 date is correct this is two years before the Marines became 'Royal' which gave them the initials RM. These may therefore be artist's initials.
