Fifteen of these Trafalgar vases made by Benjamin Smith to a design by the sculptor, Flaxman, were presented by the Lloyds Patriotic Fund to captains who had served closely with Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, or their heirs. This silver-gilt one was presented to Nelson's brother William, who became the first Earl Nelson.
