Unidentified lady (1801-81)
Large oval miniature in watercolour on ivory, in a gilt metal oval suspension frame. The back is also glazed and contains a second and more visually striking miniature. This is of a brown-haired young woman with grey eyes, shown head and shoulders turned to her left but facing out to the viewer, against a slate-grey background. She wears a black dress with a white shawl neck and a broad black headband holding up her hair. Sitter previously mistaken as Horatia Nelson.
