Upper hospital deck of the 'Geneva Cross' (1894) ambulance ship

The upper hospital deck of the 'Geneva Cross', one of the Metropolitan Asylums Board's ambulance steamers ferrying patients and staff from London to the smallpox ships in Long Reach. The steamers were fully equipped as ambulances, and nurses accompanied the patients to the hospital ships. In almost every smallpox epidemic, unvaccinated children fell sick - and died - in large numbers.
