USA Naval ensign
Part of the naval ensign of USS 'Chesapeake', captured in action with HMS 'Shannon', on 1 June 1813. A fragment only remains - the canton of the ensign with fifteen stars and two stripes. The bunting is a silk and cotton mixture, the stars are linen and the hoist is silk. The flag is hand sewn. It originally belonged to the family of 'Shannon's' commander, Admiral Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke (1776-1841). There are netting repairs at the hoist.
