Van de Velde joining the Dutch Fleet, 27 August-6 September 1664
Van de Velde joining the Dutch Fleet, 27 August [OS]/ 6 September 1664. On the threat of war with England, the Dutch assembled a large fleet under L.-Admiral J. van Wassenaer ('Obdam') to protect the merchant ships bound for Guinea. It lay weatherbound near Goeree all the autumn and dispersed 21 November [OS]/1 December 1664. Van de Velde was present with this fleet. The drawing follows on from PAJ2514 which also shows van de Velde joining the fleet a short time before. Van de Velde's galjoot is shown in the left foreground stern view. Jan Evertsen in the 'Zeelandia' is on the extreme left. The Dutch fleet in the background stretch out across the right half of the drawing.
