Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) by unknown zoom

Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)

An oval miniature, unframed, in watercolour on ivory backed with card bearing an identifying inscription. The sitter, wearing flag officer's uniform, 1795-1812, is shown long bust length, half-turned to his right but looking out at the viewer. This is a copy from Hoppner's full-length oil of Nelson, completed in 1801, or a print from it, the first published in 1805. It is fairly well done as regards the uniform, decorations and general likeness, though the face has a slightly flabby petulant look especially round the lower jaw. The original oil, (Royal Collection), has the Battle of Copenhagen in the left background, which is here simply a greyish neutrally toned one, with a slight and old vertical crack in the ivory down the right edge.
