Vice-Admiral Sir James de Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez (1757-1836)
At the very beginning of the Revolutionary Wars, Saumarez, in the 'Crescent', 36-gun, captured the French frigate 'Reunion', 36-gun, for which he was knighted. He commanded the 'Orion', 74-gun at the battle of St Vincent, 1797, and the Nile, 1798, at which he was senior captain. He is shown wearing admiral's full dress uniform 1812-1825, with the ribbon and star of the GCB and the medals for the battles of St Vincent and the Nile.
